Since 1945 The Lasker Foundation has held an annual awards-ceremony to celebrate major contributions by scientists, clinicians, and public servants to health and medicine. These awards aim to encourage support for medical research through recognition of excellence.
The foundation adopted the ‘Winged Victory of Samothrace‘ statue as an historic symbol of triumph over affliction. In keeping with this tradition, every year Nature Medicine magazine publishes a supplement with the Winged Victory on the cover to promote the awards. The brief has always been to depict the statue in new and graphically novel styles.
The sequence of images shows two issues of the Nature Medicine Lasker Award supplement, one displaying a more traditional oil-on-board representation while the other has been recreated using 3D software and showing the final render, with an ice-sculptured finish. Also included are details of underlying structural geometry.
