Imprisoned for 27 years on charges of sabotage, Nelson Mandela became a focal point of hope in the fight against apartheid in South Africa. Despite his ascent from prisoner to head of state and the consequent ushering in of real democracy in South Africa, he remained on the U.S. terrorist watch list till 2008. Madiba is the name of the clan of which Mandela was a member and is considered a title of respect.
